For those who love knitting

I love knitting things, especially things that can be useful to you! I found this great knitting pattern to make hats. Next time you pick up a pair of knitting needles, try this great hat pattern. Tell me what you think about it!

Knitting a bright, colorful hat in a nice chunky yarn not only keeps you warm in the winter, but it can help keep your spirits up because you're not wearing something drab.

This basic rolled brim hat is a cinch to knit and takes very little time thanks to the simple design and the chunky yarn. Knit one for yourself or make one as a special holiday gift for a friend.

Note: By yardage this pattern should allow you to make two hats with one skein, but a reader told me she tried and ran out of yarn, so proceed with caution if that's your plan.

Materials:

  • one skein Rowan Colourscape Chunky, or about 88 yards of your favorite chunky wool, preferably a multicolor or self-striping yarn
  • one size 10.5 US circular needle, 16-inch cable, and one set 10.5 US double-pointed needles (or a second circular for working the top of the hat with two circulars
  • scissors and yarn needle

Gauge:

14 stitches and 20 rows per 4 inches (3.5 stitches and 5 rows per inch) in Stockinette Stitch in the round. Take time to check gauge.

Size:

Finished size is 21 inches around and about 10 inches tall when brim unrolled. To fit an average woman.

Instructions:

  1. Cast on 76 stitches. Join in round, being careful not to twist.
  2. Work in Stockinette Stitch for 9 inches.
  3. Next round, *knit 2, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around.
  4. Work straight for 2 round. Change to double-pointed needles when needed.
  5. Next round, *knit 1, knit 2 together. Repeat from * around.
  6. Work 1 round straight.
  7. Next round, *knit 2 together. Repeat from * around.
  8. Work 1 round straight.
  9. *Knit 2 together. Repeat from *, ending knit 1.
  10. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail onto yarn needle, slip stitches onto needle and pull yarn tight, closing the top of the hat. Weave in ends.
